Impact of Academic, Peer, and Parental Factors on Adolescents¡¯ Sleep : The Mediating Effect of Depression and Smartphone Dependency

Objectives: This study aimed to identify the factors influencing adolescents' sleep and determine the degree of influence on their sleep through direct and indirect channels acting between factors.
Methods: Data from the Third Korean Child-Youth Panel Survey 2018 were used in this study. The number of participants was 2,328. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and 26.0 AMOS program.
Results: Results showed that eight paths were statistically significant. Depression and smartphone dependency directly affected the sleep habits of adolescents. Academic, peer, and parental factors influenced their sleep through depression and smartphone dependency as mediators. Therefore adolescents' sleep was affected not only by personal but also by social such as peer and parental factors.
Conclusions: The results of this study may provide basis for developing programs that can improve adolescents' sleep, leading to better health and general well-being of adolescents.
